they are the town's prostitutes, grandmother, mother and daughter. Father Nelson expelled them from the city and they can only stay on the other side of the bridge and isolated
I know that they are the prostitutes of the Santana place, Saint Malthus’ hometown where Father Nelson preaches. I believe that father Nelson basically exiled them from the city limits. It’s like what the Belo Horizonte religious people wanted to do to the red light district, push the prostitution out of the center of town and to the edge. I think it just draws a parallel to see how a town would work with and without the prostitutes being in easy range of men. In Santana, they are basically poor because they do not live in town and they are not allowed to cross the bridge into town. In Belo Horizonte, they are much better taken care of and have much more support.
Aliçao is the mother, Alice is the daughter of Aliçao and Alicinha is the daughter of Alice, granddaughter of Aliçao. At least, It was what the book said.
his is just my interpretation but at one point in the show said that every guy in Santana lost their virginity to one of them, so keeping them locked up symbolises how father Nelson/ traditionalists are trying to uphold traditional values by not allowing them to be free because they are sexually progressive women aka a symbol of modernity, if I'm making sense haha
i think they just represent how much the church despises and rejects prostitutes. those three ladies are known for being all the village mens first times. they also show much the head priest despises prostitutes. he literally wont let them do anything and is always punishing them. this also shows why the head priest worries so much about malthus and his feelings for hilda as she is a prostitute and malthus is supposed to be a pure saint.
From what i can tell the show starts in 1959 before Hilda turns 18, right now in ep 17 i think they are in 1961 bc the new president of Brazil they keep talking about was only in office in 1961, so she must be around 19, and she says her penance will last until 1964. I hope i got it right!
The series follows a 5-6 year period in Hilda's life, what I can say is that political events will be very important in her ending. Search what happened in Brazil in 1964...

Can someone explain the significance and meaning behind those three bridge ladies? I think it went entirely over my head when it was explained

DeleteI think they're meant to be prostitutes that the priest banished or something like that
