Every time he initiates a fight, he tears down Maria by basically telling her being a woman is wasted on her because he'd be so much better at it.
When he starts shooting and the people scream and react to him, he's basically earned what he never could on stage. Noise.
It's really sad, but then again he's awful for treating Maria like that. He's just such a realistic character - kudos to the writers.
