    1. There’s no way this was in the span of 5 years. I literally thought it’s been a year?? So every interaction of Hilda and Malthus was probably every few months 😭

    2. That is crazy that its been 5 years like how, lol did that one sister never marry that guy who'd always say hed marry her at the end of the year? and shouldnt DinDin have aged?

  4. I'm sorry if my question is annoying.
But why did Hilda become a prositute?

    1. I think its because she wanted to, in the beginning she visited the fortune teller and she didnt give her the answer she wanted ( that her current husband is the one) so because she is very impulsive, she broke of the marriage and as she said in a previous episode, that she just took the cab and drohe so far and somehow something pulled her towards the redlicht district because it seem like ,, it was the only place that accepted her for the way she is‘‘ i dont know if she wanted to specifically become a prostitue but i also dont she she minded that part because of her character
I hope that this answer is good enough and sorry if i made some mistakes english isnt my first language :)

    2. Women didnt really have a lot of options for work in the 50’s and 60’s especially in more rural areas like latin America where media and customs tend to travel slower due to distance which is why women didnt start wearing pants until recently in the eps. You could either be a teacher, a model, laborer like maria do soccoro, or a prostitute. And really you couldnr become a teacher without either your parents or husbands permission, and modelling is reserved for the high class. Not to mention she had already been a model, but once she left minas tennis she couldnt pursue that anymore. So really its all she had left, and it makes the most money so…

    3. In my understanding, She’s 17 when she got engaged. Too naive and too rushed to find love. They got engaged too early thinking it was love but it was actually not. Also bear in mind she was unstable after her ex bf unalived himself for being rejected by hilda.

She ran away because she had enough from issues and being talked about in the community and at the same time her parents are too caring for what people thinks of them, but not how Hilda feels.

Feeling suffocated, she ran away. No destination in mind.

She never thought of prostitution but fate brought her there, because she had no where to stay. And since she needs money to provide for herself, she embraced being a prostitute.

      Delete
    4. Im not sure if they ever really explained that. I just sorta guessed it was cause she needed money and her being suddenly popular she knew business would go well

      Delete
    5. She explains to Malthus that she felt guilty for what she had done to men (the one who killed himself, leaving the other one at the altar) so she sees it as her pendance

      Delete
    6. I agree with the comments that she ha dno where else to go and after being so deceived by her friends, boyfriend and parents she had no other option. However, I will add that the reason behind her breaking up the engagement was because her boyfriend believed her friends when they told him he had many lovers, and that she loved having male attention like a b. He didn't even question that they were lying and didn't even dare to ask Hilda if it was true, he just assumed it was and that he loved her so much that he didn't care. Of course Hilda didn't took this as a compliment and for a virtous hot temperead girl this is the wors insult she could recieved. SO her going to the red districts is like okay so you are saying I am a whore and you don't care well now I am actually going to give you real reasons to think like that. And even when she becomes a camelia he is the only guy who cannot have her. It is like revenge. She was not even thinking about the prophecy really, cause she remembered the fortuneteller just after she lost the shoe. Just after that she says that all what she is fdoing is not just because she was insulted by eveyone she tought care about her but it is actually the way to get real happiness.

      Delete
    7. The way I see it she did it for Malthus. She believed and ACCEPTED the prophecy of the fortune teller, who told her that she will suffer a great deal till she finds happiness. The biggest challenge and suffering one can bring upon themselves is to go into prostitution. She did all this so she can find Malthus sooner (by completely escalating her suffering) and so that she accept her long awaited happiness fully and wholeheartedly, when the time came. As we know Hilda never left business unfinished and everything she did was at a 110%. That was the penance she set for herself and she had to follow it.
Also since episode 1 we can see she was very sensitive to people's suffering. By being around all the sad and tormented souls, she could absorb them, feel them, and thus coming closer to God. (In that sense she was more Saint than the Saint himself!).
In my opinion, she and Malthus had the same mission but started from two completely opposite points of reference, so they can meet in the middle. :)

    8. I see it like at the start was a revenge to her ex fiancé, because when they broke up he keeps saying to her that she is a "hoe", that she "cheated on him" and "she likes men attention". She never do something wrong and she decided to make real the things that he was acusing her.

    4. i think santana des ferros is going to be isolated because there was some sort of plague mentioned, and saint is already there. so he won’t be able to leave once they’re under lockdown. therefore even if he wanted to, he wouldn’t be able to change his mind and come meet her in time for the prophecy. so i think she took the plane to be able to give them a chance to be able to meet in time for the prophecy

      Delete
    5. based on roberto and hilda's conversation, there's a plague in santana and hilda feared it might k-word malthus along with the others, hindering the chance for them to meet on march 31. so she got on a plane that sprayed medicine (described as cure, joy, and life in this episode) to keep everyone (esp Malthus) in santana safe from the plague.

  8. THIS EP WAS SO INFURIATING. I know the novel focuses more on the communism and politics that are within the show, but the show clearly catered more towards the romance. which is why i don't get why you see Malthus and Hilda for like five minutes combined. idm the politics but when 95% of the final episode is about the politics that probably isn't the reason people decided to watch it, its so annoying. i just wanna see the love story of Malthus and Hilda unfold atp ;-;

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. no spoilers but politics is very important to Hilda and Malthus ending

      Delete
    2. but politics is super important, have you read the book? Just because the series shows romance a little more, it doesn't mean that the series is about this. This is a political series, and EVEN the romance is POLITICAL and please, the series talking about MILITARY DICTATORSHIP and everyone belittling such an important story in Brazil that literally changed our way of living and thinking until today

    3. pov: me when I watch skipping scenes and I don't understand why the plot focuses so much on that

      Delete
    4. Lmao I actually love the side plots

      Delete
    5. True, as much as I adore this show, I didn't even mind politics in it and it was ok to me so far, but last two or three episodes I was so bored because of communists, especially that comrade Lorca, and rest, I almost wanted to skip it all, but I managed somehow, barely, to get to the end of those episodes...

    2. I think that the epidemic can serve as a metaphor for broader social, political or cultural changes. it likely represents the challenges facing Brazilian society at that time. when hilda arrives, she brings with her a gust of change and turmoil that disrupts the tranquility of the small town. Her arrival symbolizes the unknown and the mystery, which shakes up the lives of the inhabitants of Santana dos Ferros. the plane itself doesn’t drop anything tangible, but her arrival symbolizes the beginning of significant changes in the lives of the characters and the town. it’s my interpretation but i’m not sure though

    2. did you guys actually watch the show without skipping? A few years pass, this is shown subtly when a character talks about a new president, a carnival (another year has passed) and all the little details.

      Delete
    3. + months since Malthus went to Rio de Janeiro, small details that show the passage of time, but it is really more evident due to the president changes (I imagine that for someone who is not Brazilian it is hard to notice.)

      Delete
    4. Real cause I never skipped and I’m so confused how she said it’s been 5 years. Can someone tell me what episode was the time jump?

      Delete
    5. I think that at the beginning of this episode there was a timejump (Malthus getting some letter and being in Santana for quite some time, Aramel managed to become somewhat successful in Hollywood after some time, I guess), but they didn't mention/write it...

      Delete
    6. i thought i was the only one confused about the timeline but i did rewatch the ep 16 when hilda confessed her love for malthus, he mentioned "you love me and will continue this life for three more years?" Like how long did hilda waited for him after she turned down the two gentlemen and confessed she's in love publicly in episode 28?
