Honestly, these series looked cool on tiktok. But Hilda is just not it, she is selfish, immature and honestly needs to work on herself. The novel itself and the story and what is happening in the background is actually pretty interesting and enjoyable. I'm not on Malthus side at all, he has his flaws but Hilda is just too emotional immature for my liking.

All of Hilda’s encounters are with lingerie, and we don’t see them actually out until she has sex with Malthus. Maybe the writers wanted to show them with Malthus to show us that they have a genuine connection, compared to the one-night stands she has at the red light district. They took MC's arc about learning to be confident in his appearance (also crazier given the fact that he's the only named black character in thr show) only to forget about it in favor of giving Aramel a redemption arc when he literally did nothing to deserve it when he was involved in trafficking.

Hilda (rightly) accused Malthus of being vain and prideful despite being called a saint by others. His "sainthood" is mainly tied up in the idea that suffering for the sake of suffering is somehow godly but in truth it doesn't actually help real people. The red roses were a true act of kindness towards real people, particularly those outcast and shunned by society. Being a saint isn't something you can achieve by remaining pure, but by being kind, giving, loving to all.
You described it perfectly!!! And to add, it's interesting how the roses are red. Throughout the show, (esp w Hilda and Malthus) there is the comparison of characters to a 'pure' white flower aka sinless, and Malthus giving red flowers as a gesture of his goodwill shows he is finally being compassionate/ trying to understand those who are seen as deviant. Alternatively, his choice of a red flower could show a change in his own character, the 'corruption' that Father Nelson is so worried about. Either way, there is so much symbolism in the show, it's brilliant

They have drastically different ways of doing the same mistake. way. They're both respectively spiraling into a form of self-sacrifice/punishment in the name of god, when in fact they're dealing with their guilt in ungodly ways. I don't understand. Hilda keeps saying Malthus is selfish. But what does she think about her actions??? Are they not selfish? Everything she has ever done up to this point were all selfish, inconsiderate of others' feelings. Left her ex-fiance on the altar, plunged her parents to shame without so much as an explanation, selling herself in the name of penance she inflicted on herself while causing pain to wives and mothers, chased after a saint who clearly told her to go away and harassed him to no end just because of hope of happiness all for HERSELF. If this were subverted, and Malthus was the one chasing after her, undressing in front of her and doing all the things she did, it would've been a clear case of sexual harrassment. I guarantee that if the roles were reversed, many viewers would still blame the woman. That's a big trend I always see in any show that has a female character that is less than perfect. They took MC's arc about learning to be confident in his appearance (also crazier given the fact that he's the only named black character in thr show) only to forget about it in favor of giving Aramel a redemption arc when he literally did nothing to deserve it when he was involved in trafficking.

ReplyDeleteHilda (rightly) accused Malthus of being vain and prideful despite being called a saint by others. His "sainthood" is mainly tied up in the idea that suffering for the sake of suffering is somehow godly but in truth it doesn't actually help real people. The red roses were a true act of kindness towards real people, particularly those outcast and shunned by society. Being a saint isn't something you can achieve by remaining pure, but by being kind, giving, loving to all.

Throughout the show, (esp w Hilda and Malthus) there is the comparison of characters to a 'pure' white flower aka sinless, and Malthus giving red flowers as a gesture of his goodwill shows he is finally being compassionate/ trying to understand those who are seen as deviant. Alternatively, his choice of a red flower could show a change in his own character, the 'corruption' that Father Nelson is so worried about. Either way, there is so much symbolism in the show, it's brilliant

Everything she has ever done up to this point were all selfish, inconsiderate of others' feelings. Left her ex-fiance on the altar, plunged her parents to shame without so much as an explanation, selling herself in the name of penance she inflicted on herself while causing pain to wives and mothers, chased after a saint who clearly told her to go away and harassed him to no end just because of hope of happiness all for HERSELF. Aren't all that selfish??? If this were subverted, and Malthus was the one chasing after her, undressing in front of her and doing all the things she did, it would've been a clear case of sexual harrassment. But no one's pointi g fingers at her because she's a woman.

Deleteomg yes i feel for hilda but when she yelled at malthus for feeling guilty after sleeping with her and called him selfish for not immediately deciding to drop priesthood, which he had been conditioned since birth for, i felt it was too unfair. his mom literally makes him feel so guilty and father nelson too; he would be disappointing them gravely if he leaves his sainthood for her and he's never known anything else. he's always made his mom and father nelson happy and proud for staying pure and now he's feeling and doing all these things, while they might make him happy, that he's always been conditioned to think are sinful and wrong and would break his mom's heart. she should have had some understanding for that. she left a whole life behind but she did that on her own terms whereas malthus is in a completely different situation where he doesn't have autonomy over his own life.
