  20. While I adore the dynamic between Hilda and Malthus, I also love the supporting cast and the way the show doesn't reduce sex workers to flat characters to be objectified or to helpless traumatized victims, either; instead, it just makes them feel like actual people. Thank you so much for translating!

  27. Many are against Malthus mom tbh I think differently😶‍🌫️ I agree that she shouldn't force him to become a Saint. But what I can understand is that she doesn't accept their love. I really wouldn't think it would be great to hand my son/daughter over to a sex worker. As a mother, you always assume the worst. The first thought that comes to mind is that the sex worker is no longer capable of love. I think she just wants to spare him heartbreak too yk

    ReplyDelete

    1. What’s more is I think Father Nelson manipulated Malthus’ mother into going to the Red-Light District on her own. He even said “I have given up on trying to fight Hilda Hurricane.” Which is a bold face *lie*.

Regardless, it caused Malthus’ mother to jump into action - which of course is what Father Nelson wanted (he’s basically trying all his avenues of action). Even if it means sending this very sheltered woman into the heart of sin, a place he wouldn’t even dare step into himself.

He’s such a scumbag. I just hope some of Hilda’s friends find Malthus’ mom before anything bad happens to her.

      Delete
    2. I don't think it matters who Hilda is, if it would be any other woman, his mom and the priest would be mad anyway.. sure it doesn't help that she's a prostitute, but the mom's and priest's main issue is that this woman will make Malthus leave his "calling" to be a saint. But I agree that it's none of their business and should let him decide for himself :/

      Delete
    3. what was bad was that she didn't even know about hilda yet, she just knew she was a girl that malthus was in love with. she immediately jumped on him and made him feel guilty of having feelings for a girl, and that he should stick to his "saintly" duties. i can understand the sex worker thing, but she wanted malthus to be perfect from the start which is controlling and manipulative asf. she's in the wrong for that.

      Delete
    4. True, you should first know a person before you can judge them. It could also have been that it was a sex worker who was forced to do this. But when it comes to Hilda: of course she is a likeable woman, I also want her to get together with Malthus bc of the romance. But if we face the truth, Hilda came across as very selfish and heartless, especially in the first few episodes. It's not right to tell a person at the last minute on your wedding day that you don't want to marry them. She had enough time to think about it and as she says herself, she does what comes to her mind, which is not okay and she doesn't fear the consequences. Then the whole thing ends very badly, considering the stories that are told about her like men killed themselves bc of her and that didn't happen without reason.
Even if Malthus' mother knew her and still didn't accept their love, I would be on her side ngl

      Delete
    5. In fact, she's a fucking narcissist, all she wants is to be the mother of a saint.

      Delete
    6. even if she's a sex worker that doesn't mean she's not capable of loving someone, what I like about this telenovela is that they didn't give flat personalities to sex workers they portrayed them as people who have emotions, dramas, social life

      Delete
    7. She freaked out right away, even when Malthus told her it was just a girl. She didn't know then, but she didn't wanna hear it and straight up told him to shut up.

Right off the start I had a feeling she was a bit weird. She's not necessarily malicious, but controlling and misguided. She was a widow and raised in a village, so perhaps it was easy for her to find comfort in a dream and the priest enabled her. That's what I thought in the first episodes.

As the show goes on it becomes more and more clear that she is obsessed with Malthus being a saint and she doesn't actually consider his true wishes because she enjoys this status of being the mother of a saint and it's probably what kept her going all these years. She wants him to stay a child forever. She even ignores his distress until his sainthood is threatened and conspires with the priest, betraying her son's trust.

When Malthus told her he kissed a girl (and she didn't know it was a prostitute) and her first reaction was to tell him to shut up and act like he did something horrible confirmed my suspicions. It's valid for a woman of that time to not be okay with her son dating a prostitute: but she didn't know when he told her. Idk she's giving boy mom.

  28. Omg - this episode WRECKED ME. Seeing Malthus taking off his robes, one layer at a time, shedding his Sainthood to see (what Hilda would call) the real person underneath, was mind blowing.

We expected to see perfect Malthus. Saintly Malthus. Both over and underneath the white robes. We expected to see perfect skin, a smooth and unblemished body, nurtured and loved by the Church and his mother. A “pure rose” as they say. But instead, we find scars. We are shock to find that this delicate pure and kind soul is covered in scars. Some fresh, some old, but slashed across his body like thorns.

He is not the perfect rose everyone expects of him. He’s something more. He’s human.

Mannnn… this show is so deep sometimes. I just can’t get enough of it. Thank you.

Also - the part where all the women prayed in front of the store - like c’mon, we all know what y’all were actually doing there. Psssh smh 🤦‍♀️

  58. I feel so bad for Malthus, everyone has pushed him to be perfectly pure, when it's not humanly possible. They've kept him in a bubble, so naturally once he's exposed to the outside world, he doesn't know how to handle it. He's 22, and when he kisses a girl, he feels like everything he worked for is ruined, plus he's destroying everyone's expectations of him, especially his mom and Fr. Nelson's, when it's a totally normal experience. Fr. Nelson has even taught him to fear his own thoughts out of fear of God. Imagine teaching that it's wrong to love another person smh

Also it's kinda funny how Malthus and Hilda are reacting differently to the kiss, but I feel bad for Malthus being forced to be someone only because of selfish people around him.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I feel like Malthus's mother had some sort of post-pregnancy psychosis from her husband dying whilst she was pregnant. She was probably feeling extremely alone and scared and that's what's caused her 'visions' clinging to the hope that her son will become something beyond-human. Maybe she thinks his Saint-hood may save him from dying as her husband did, or ensure he will make it to heaven.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have a similar perspective on this! Everyone on the village is quite religious so when she lost her husband while pregnant she must have turned to religion to cope, consciously AND subconsciously. Post-partum psychosis and religious ideas probably don't mix well, because you don't seperate delusion from reality. I think Father Nelson enabled her so she fell deeper into the trip and that's why she kept at it for so long. The idea of raising a saint is probably what kept her going. She's not malicious so far, just a lonely and misguided soul that is holding on to her son way too tightly.

I am just blown away by how well-written and complex these charcters are...

  79. I love Malthus and his dramatic ass 😭. But what I don't love is how selfish father Nelson is. He only thinks about fostering a saint not about Malthus or what Malthus wants in life, poor boy had a crisis the first time he ever saw a beatiful lady like Hilda and even another one over her shoe. And now he's having another one over discovering a boner. That's some deep ass religious abuse from Nelson and maybe some of it even from his mother. His mother's love is conditional, its obvious she wouldn't love him the way she does now if he never becomes a saint like she's always wanted. Oh poor Malthus he only ever did what his mother and father Nelson told him to do and in returnn he's become such an innocent ignorant boy. Ignorant of the natural ways his body would react or maybe even look like poor poor boy.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I’m sorry but Hilda is too selfish, she’s just thinking of marriage and how easy will be for her to get poor Santo out of the way to priesthood without thinking of how this whole situation is affecting him. She claims she loves him but yet she has never considered his feelings, she’s just too infatuated with what the fortune-teller told her and with her little idealized concept of the perfect love, it is actually so sad. I understand that Santo has all of that religious trauma that he has to work out but his love for God and the happiness he had before Hilda appeared was genuine and pure, and her making him turn his back to what he has worked and lived for his whole life without batting an eye is just SICKENING.

She’s having another one of her usually temporary infatuations because she knows he’s forbidden and I bet that if they actually end up marrying each other at the end she’s gonna end up having another one of her random senseless outbursts and just leave him behind.

The amount of ppl misinterpretating the mirror scene is driving me insane. It represents him shedding his holy-image, the image everyone sees him as, and looking at himself for what he really is: human. Bare, exposed, scarred, flawed, human. It's not about self-pleasure in the slightest.
