I had to rewatch the first 10 mins because whoa! Finally!! Poor Malthus. Hilda feels unrequited love but he’s being torn in half. He’s trying so hard to please everyone but himself and choosing himself would be “giving in to temptation”. He just can’t win.
The damage that happened in the church is had to be because father Nelson keeps trying to get in the way of Malthus and Hilda. God doesn’t hate love, Malthus loving Hilda would lead her way from the self inflicted punishment she’s putting herself through. There are higher forces at work and father Nelson is thinking a lot about the image of the church. Now it’s messed up regardless.
Had I been Hilda's friend, I would have slapped her to senses. She does all the things she does without rhyme or reason. Everything she did, she did out of impulsivity. No one forced her to be Juca's girlfriend, she accepted his proposal out of her own volition, then got cold feet on the day of the wedding out of nowhere, left her home for no reason, caused grief to her parents without giving them an explanation, entered prostitution as a form of self-inflicted punishment saying it's penance when penance should be done in a sinless form of suffering, instead of participating in sin and causing others to sin. All that education was wasted on her because girl can't seem to think straight after all this time.

i think before marrying juca she just wanted reassurance. it seems like she loves the idea of having that romance and on the way of marriage but only realizes how much weigh of that marriage actually is gonna be on her life so she kept asking juca reassurance especially her mom told her about what happens in “honeymoon”. then juca suddenly made assumptions that she sleeps with many other guys and he couldn't be talked with so she made those assumptions true especially when even her parents doesn't understand her. its like when a kid does her best to do everything what life was written for people to do or parents ask their kids do, but still never showing actual care/love they needed so they rebel in what they know their parents are afraid of them going to do. she is young and naive, and act on emotions but thats her flaw on the other side she’s really caring for people but no one does the same for her and its only when they needed something.
